Project summary

Using an image base of real images of passenger carry-on baggage without dangerous objects and carry-on baggage with threats (for example, pistols, revolvers, knives, ammunition, etc.), and by using a knowledge base with expert's knowledge, the prototype of the system for automatic detection of threats will be designed. The system is to detect threats in a real time and to generate a warning signal to a human operator. The image of passenger carry-on baggage containing the threat will be automatically stored in a compressed form for further analysis and further updating of the base. Such images could be distributed through the computer network to other airports or distant users. The proposed project is planned as a student's project with the following phases:
  • Designing of the image base of passenger carry-on baggage without dangerous objects and carry-on baggage with threats (for example, pistols, revolvers, knives, ammunition, etc.);
  • Development of the subsystem for image preprocessing and feature extraction;
  • Development of the pattern recognition subsystem;
  • Designing of a knowledge base containing experts' knowledge;
  • Designing of the user and network interface for the prototype of the system.
The project will be realized by a group of students attending the courses "Pattern Recognition" and "Intelligent systems", at the Faculty of EE and Computing, University of Zagreb. Potential users of the system are airport security systems, as well as government institutions, courts, museums and galleries. The system is also useful for security personal training and education.
